Abolition of sharia courts
A sharia court is an Islamic religious law that governs not only religious rituals, but aspects of day-to-day life in Islam. Under sharia law people may not consume alcohol, borrow money at interest, or allow women in their family to go out in public without a veil. Sharia law also allowed men to have as many as four wives only if the first wife agrees and he is able to manage all of his wives and children. Atatürk banned sharia courts on 8 April 1924.
